Essential Setup Tips for Your Nintendo Switch 2
Setting up your Nintendo Switch 2 can feel a bit daunting if you’re not familiar with game consoles, but don’t worry! We’ll guide you through the essential steps to get your new device up and running quickly. From connecting the dock to transferring data from your previous Switch, this setup guide will walk you through everything you need to know.
When you unbox your Nintendo Switch 2, you’ll find several components, but you only need a few to get started: the Nintendo Switch 2 console, two Joy-Con controllers (the grip and straps are optional), an HDMI cable, a USB power cable, and a compatible plug adapter. You can explore the rest of the accessories later!
Once you’ve unpacked everything, press the power button located on the top-left side of the console to turn it on.
The first steps involve selecting your language and region, which will determine the language displayed on your console and the region for your Nintendo eShop.
Next, you’ll be prompted to read the Important Information document. It’s a good idea to give it a look, as everyone knows how crucial those terms and conditions can be!
The following step is to set up your internet connection. Have your Wi-Fi password handy, or you can connect an Ethernet cable to the back of the dock and set up the Switch 2 through your TV. The touchscreen makes this process quick and straightforward.
Once connected, your console will begin downloading the day one system update in the background. You’ll also need to select your timezone for the Switch 2’s clock.
Next, you’ll learn about the three modes of using your Switch 2: Handheld, Tabletop, or Docked. You can switch between these modes anytime by detaching the Joy-Con controllers from the console, which is done by pressing the button located under the triggers.
No playstyle is superior to another; however, keep in mind that hardware-intensive games generally perform better when the Switch 2 is docked and connected to your TV.
At this point, you’ll want to connect your Switch 2 dock. It’s slightly different from the original Switch and Switch OLED docks, and the rear panel can be a bit tricky to detach, so be cautious when removing it!
After that, connect the USB-C power adapter and HDMI cable to their respective slots before reattaching the rear panel. Align it at the bottom and hinge it up to secure it. If you have an Ethernet cable for a wired connection, you can plug it in at the bottom as well.
Next, connect the dock to your TV and plug it into power. If your TV supports 4K and 120Hz refresh rates, make sure to use the appropriate HDMI port.
If you have an original Switch or Switch OLED, you can transfer your data at this stage. This process will move your games, save data, login info, screenshots, and videos to your new Switch 2. If you have a microSD card, insert it now (more on that below), and then you can start the data transfer.
To sign into your Nintendo Account, scan the QR code and log in online, then enter the 5-digit verification code that appears on your phone into your Switch 2 to sync them.
Bring your old Switch and new Switch 2 close together to initiate the data transfer. On your old Switch, navigate to System Settings > System > System Transfer and follow the prompts until you see “Searching for the Nintendo Switch 2 console.”
It may take some time, but once you hit ‘Start Receiving Data’ on your Switch 2, the transfer will begin. Once completed, you’re all set!
If you prefer not to transfer your data—perhaps because you don’t have an original Switch or want to start fresh—simply select ‘Don’t Transfer Data.’ You’ll just need to sign into your Nintendo Account or create a new one to get started.
If you have a compatible microSD card, you can insert it now. Only the new express microSD cards can be used for game storage on the Switch 2, so ensure yours is marked with “express” or “EX.”
The microSD card slot is located under the stand on the back of the console. Insert it with the tabs on the right side and the text facing up.
If you plan to get a microSD card later, be sure to look for the best options available for the Nintendo Switch 2.
Now you’re all set to dive into your Nintendo Switch 2. Enjoy your gaming adventure!
