A complete remake of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 featuring updated gameplay and a revamped ending is planned, as revealed by a Lucasfilm Games executive.
A recent lawsuit regarding the canceled DLC for the remaster of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 has unveiled some exciting news about the KOTOR remake and future plans from Lucasfilm Games. It appears that a full remake of KOTOR 2 is in the works, aimed at addressing the game’s notoriously incomplete ending.
This information comes from Douglas Reilly, VP of Lucasfilm Games, who shared insights during a deposition related to the missing DLC earlier this year. His comments have emerged in a new report, where he refers to the KOTOR 2 remake by its codename, “Juliet.”
“Juliet was the code name for a project where we were going to do a full remake of KOTOR II with modern art, modern gameplay, while preserving the story, characters, and overall content of KOTOR II, but remaking it for modern hardware with updated graphics and features,” Reilly explained. “It was something we were discussing with Aspyr.”
The KOTOR 1 remake was first announced in 2021 but soon faced development challenges at Aspyr. Reports indicated that the project had shifted to Saber Interactive, although the specific developer was not disclosed at that time. Reilly later confirmed that the project has moved to Mad Head Games, the studio known for the upcoming Hellraiser: Revival.
Interestingly, Mad Head Games’ official site mentions that they are working on another “unannounced AAA game based on a famous and beloved IP,” which could very well include a KOTOR remake. There have also been recent whispers about a new Old Republic-themed game potentially being revealed soon. While these rumors remain unverified, the upcoming Game Awards on December 11 would be an ideal platform for the KOTOR remake to make a comeback.
An announcement would be even more thrilling if it included news about the sequel’s remake. KOTOR 2 debuted in 2004, and many players, including myself, found its ending to be anticlimactic and unsatisfactory. After the game launched on PC, modders uncovered evidence in the game files indicating that significant portions of the ending and other game elements were cut before release, likely due to time constraints faced by developer Obsidian.
Over the years, fans released the Restored Content Modification, which reintroduces many of the story elements and features that were originally omitted. When Aspyr launched a KOTOR 2 remaster for Switch in 2022, they intended to offer the RCM project as DLC, marking the first time console players could experience it. However, that DLC was ultimately canceled, leading to a lawsuit against Aspyr for false advertising.
The lawsuit’s details are the focus of the new report, but it appears the DLC was scrapped because Disney’s legal team hesitated about securing the rights to the modders’ work.
Despite the setbacks in the KOTOR 1 remake’s development, Reilly stated that the project “is still technically on the road map” and won’t face the same legal hurdles that derailed the restored content DLC. “The plan was we would remake the content that was in the RCM as it relates to Star Wars in that Juliet project,” Reilly said. Let’s hope that plan stays on track.
