“Nintendo’s Legal Team Discouraged Use of ‘Nindies’ to Protect Brand Integrity, Former Employees Reveal”
Have you ever thought about what happened to Nindies, Nintendo’s indie game showcase brand before it was replaced by “Indie World”? Well, it turns out it was quietly phased out due to legal concerns.
In a recent episode of the Kit & Krysta Podcast, Krysta Yang shared insights on why Nintendo moved away from the Nindies brand. She and her co-host, Kit Ellis, both former marketing leads at Nintendo, revealed that the decision came from the legal team after years of using the Nindies name.
“Nindies was a creation of the Publisher and Developer Relations team, and they really ran with it,” Ellis recalled. “They did everything they could to promote it, even making t-shirts and a logo. But then the legal team stepped in and said, ‘You can’t do this anymore.'”
Yang elaborated on the legal restrictions, explaining that combining brand names is a no-go. “For example, ‘Wiimote’ was a problem. You can’t use that term,” she noted, emphasizing that it “dilutes the brand,” making it harder to defend in legal situations.
Ellis remembered the original creator of the Nindies name reacting fiercely when it was threatened, but Yang pointed out that he ultimately faced the harsh reality of legal constraints. “He was left licking his wounds for a long time before he eventually left the company.”
On a different note, I have a feeling Nintendo might be gearing up to announce a Mario Kart World DLC, especially as it prepares to highlight a Donkey Kong character that has been kept under wraps since launch.
