RPG Enthusiasts Speculate That Baldur’s Gate 3 Studio Is Hinting at Divinity: Original Sin 3 with Game Awards Hell Statue

Geoff Keighley might not be summoning demons after all. RPG enthusiasts have been buzzing about the hellish statuette from The Game Awards, linking it to a recent trademark application filed on Tuesday. A law firm submitted a European trademark under the name “Divinity,” and the accompanying stylized graphic bears a striking resemblance to the symbol seen on the Game Awards statue.

Alongside the Divinity application, two other trademarks featuring similar imagery were filed. One depicts a figure ensnared in a spiderweb, while the other closely resembles the symbol on the Game Awards trophy. The Divinity trademark is categorized under computer game programs and video game software, as well as books, clothing, board games, and various entertainment services. However, the application lacks any direct connection to the Game Awards statue or to Larian Studios, the developers behind Divinity: Original Sin and Baldur’s Gate 3.

Larian Studios has been approached for comments regarding the trademark and its possible ties to the Game Awards statue. While a representative didn’t mention Divinity: Original Sin 3, they did confirm that Divinity: Original Sin 2 is set to release on next-gen consoles, although an official announcement will come later.

Michael Douse, the publishing director at Larian Studios, also addressed the speculation on social media, clarifying that there are no current plans for a new Divinity: Original Sin 3. He assured fans that once they are ready to reveal their next project, they will share the news.

In 2024, Larian Studios announced they are working on two new projects, with founder Swen Vincke only revealing that one is codenamed Excalibur. Following the massive success of Baldur’s Gate 3, released in 2023, Larian has a rich history with the Divinity series, starting with 2002’s Divine Divinity and its 2004 sequel, Beyond Divinity. They have published six different Divinity titles, including expansions and enhanced editions. The last entry, Divinity: Original Sin 2, came out in 2017. When asked about Divinity: Original Sin 3 in 2024, Vincke hinted that the next game would be “different than what you think it is,” yet still “familiar.”

With The Game Awards just around the corner, it seems unlikely that Larian Studios will provide any insights into the trademark application or its potential connection to the enigmatic statue before the event. Nevertheless, many fans remain hopeful that something beyond just an enhanced version of Divinity: Original Sin 2 will be unveiled during the show on Thursday.
