UN:Me Blends Silent Hill Vibes with Among Us Gameplay, Putting You in the Role of the Imposter
The Day of the Devs pre-Game Awards digital showcase offered a sneak peek at some intriguing upcoming titles, but one game that’s really stuck with me is UN:Me, a psychological thriller from Historia and Shueisha Games that seems to merge elements of Silent Hill and Among Us.
While many games have taken inspiration from the Among Us formula and put their own spin on it (like Eyes of Hellfire), UN:Me distinguishes itself as a single-player experience where the protagonist embodies both the impostor and the innocent.
“It’s a unique game where a girl harboring multiple human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind,” producer Yasukazu Kawai explains.
In UN:Me, players take on the role of an unnamed female character, likely a high school student given her uniform. She contains four distinct souls, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control at any moment, unleashing their fears and phobias on her unexpectedly. Gameplay clips from the showcase suggest that much of the action unfolds in a hospital, with other scenes featuring the protagonist exploring a church.
“What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?” game director Shun Sasaki poses during the gameplay showcase. “Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. What may seem trivial to some can trigger something primal within us. This game delves into that idea — anxieties that are unique to each individual. Four souls reside within the girl. You control whichever soul surfaces at any moment, but they’ll switch involuntarily as you progress. During exploration, each soul’s fears and anxieties become amplified, attacking the girl one after another. When the soul changes, so does the fear you experience as a player.”
At first glance, UN:Me bears a striking resemblance to the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses who all share the same unsettling face, sporting smiles that are just a bit too wide and necks that seem a touch too long. The waiting room is populated by patients with enormous flowers sprouting from where their heads should be. Like Silent Hill, flowers are abundant in UN:Me, contrasting natural beauty with eerie horror. The protagonist even has a slight resemblance to Silent Hill f’s Hinako Shimizu. However, UN:Me is far from a mere imitation; it challenges players to discern which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is “real.” If a player identifies a specific soul as not their own, they must eliminate it.
“Each of the four souls claims that the body belongs to them,” a representative from Historia, Takuya Yamanaka, explains in the trailer. “Throughout the game, you must determine who is real.”
Once players figure out that a soul is fake, they must take action to eliminate it. However, since each soul can deceive or obscure the truth, making the right choice can be tricky.
“Perhaps you’ve already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands,” Yamanaka warns. “The last one standing might be a fake. Either way, your decisions are irreversible.”
No pressure at all!
While a release date for UN:Me hasn’t been announced yet, it’s currently available to wishlist on Steam.
