PC Gamers Miss Out as Major US Miners Shift Focus to AI Megafactories Over Bitcoin

It seems the mining gold rush has hit a snag. It’s not surprising to see some of the biggest bitcoin operations in the US shifting gears from mining to AI processing. The details of this transition are quite fascinating.

Reports indicate that across the country, bitcoin mining facilities are undergoing similar transformations. In the past 18 months, at least eight publicly traded bitcoin mining companies have announced plans to partially or fully pivot to AI, including Bitfarms, Core Scientific, Riot, IREN, TeraWulf, CleanSpark, Bit Digital, MARA Holdings, and Cipher Mining.

So, what does this mean for PC gaming? Is the chaos surrounding PC component prices so overwhelming that it hardly matters?

What’s particularly interesting is a comment from a venture capital expert: “Bitcoin mining created the blueprint for the AI compute boom and the modern data center,” says Meltem Demirors of Crucible Capital. “They have found that their cost of capital is much lower if they go into the AI narrative. They have the powered shell, they’re ripping out the [mining machines], and their tenant is bringing the GPUs.”

Essentially, it’s the infrastructure—buildings, power supplies, cooling systems—that’s being repurposed, not the mining hardware itself. In the early days of bitcoin mining, this would have had significant implications for PC gaming, as gaming GPUs were used for mining back then.

If that were still the case today, we might expect a flood of used mining GPUs hitting the market, ready to be repurposed for gaming. Unfortunately, the reality is that bitcoin mining has long been dominated by specialized chips, known as ASICs, which are only useful for mining bitcoin.

Now that bitcoin mining has become too costly to sustain, those ASICs are largely useless.

Given this situation, it’s likely more economical to retrofit a mining facility with AI GPUs than to construct a new one. As the reports suggest, bitcoin miners are known for their opportunistic nature, and here we are.

Returning to the topic of PC gaming hardware, it’s tough to see how this shift will impact us. The mining chips being removed are irrelevant to gamers, and the AI GPUs being installed would have been used elsewhere, just at a higher cost. It all feels like a zero-sum game. With the current surge in AI demand and a dire memory supply crisis, “neutral” effectively translates to “negative.” Unfortunately, there’s no silver lining here.
