Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic Trailer Resonates with Knights of the Old Republic, Says Mass Effect Creator, Who Credits the Classic RPG for Joining BioWare

BioWare’s executive producer Michael Gamble has shared his enthusiasm about former Mass Effect lead Casey Hudson taking the helm of a new Star Wars RPG.

It’s been over twenty years since the release of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and its sequel, and now we’re on the verge of a third installment… sort of. Announced during The Game Awards 2025, Hudson, who directed the original KOTOR and later the Mass Effect trilogy, is back to lead the project titled Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. This game serves as a spiritual successor to the beloved RPGs from BioWare and Obsidian, with the first game even having a remake stuck in development limbo.

Gamble, who is currently overseeing the next Mass Effect title at BioWare, took to Twitter to express his thoughts on the announcement, stating that the original Knights of the Old Republic is “the reason I came to BioWare.” He joined the studio as a project manager for Mass Effect 2 and has most recently served as an executive producer on Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

KOTOR is the reason I came to BioWare. This trailer echoes it nearly 2 decades later. Fuck yeah, @CaseyDHudson. You got this, man.

Gamble further remarked, “This trailer echoes it nearly 2 decades later,” adding, “Fuck yeah, @CaseyDHudson. You got this, man.”

Unfortunately, similar to the new Mass Effect game, there isn’t much information available about Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic beyond a stunning CG trailer.

While I felt a pang of anxiety every time I saw the year 2027 mentioned during The Game Awards—much like with the new Mega Man game, another dormant series—the lack of even a tentative release year suggests we might be in for a long wait for Fate of the Old Republic. However, Hudson’s return to the director’s chair after about fifteen years gives hope that this project will live up to his impressive track record.
