Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a “spiritual successor” to the KOTOR games, focusing on honoring their legacy rather than being a direct sequel.
This year’s Game Awards brought a wave of exciting announcements, including the reveal of Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, a fresh action RPG set in the iconic galaxy far, far away. While it shares the same timeline and features several developers from the beloved Knights of the Old Republic series, this title is not a direct sequel or a continuation of those games.
Douglas Reilly, VP and GM of Lucasfilm Games, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “Throughout my two decades of working on Star Wars games, including Star Wars: The Old Republic, I have been fortunate to see firsthand just how much these stories mean to our fans. For us, this new project is about honoring that legacy by creating something in the same tradition of a deep, cinematic, choice-driven role-playing game.”
The development team emphasizes that this is not a direct follow-up to KOTOR, but it does include key figures from those earlier projects. Casey Hudson, the former general manager at BioWare who directed the original Knights of the Old Republic, now leads Arcanaut Studios, the new team behind Fate of the Old Republic.
Hudson describes the game as a “spiritual successor” to the groundbreaking work done by BioWare 25 years ago. He notes, “Fate of the Old Republic represents an opportunity to explore a contemporary vision of a definitive Star Wars experience, using state-of-the-art technology and game design, and an all-new story crafted specifically to deliver on the combination of player agency and immersion in Star Wars that was at the heart of KOTOR.”
While details about Fate of the Old Republic remain sparse, Hudson has indicated that development is still in the early stages. The game promises to introduce new characters and narratives, steering clear of further adventures featuring the Exile and Revan, but it’s already shaping up to be a powerful addition to the Star Wars universe.
Additionally, a “full remake” of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2, featuring “modern gameplay” and an enhanced ending, is also in the works, according to an executive from Lucasfilm Games.
