Ex-Titanfall Developers Swap Mechs for Horses in New Fantasy Shooter Highguard

As The Game Awards 2025 wrapped up, a thrilling announcement emerged from Wildlight, a development team featuring veterans from Titanfall 2 and Apex Legends. They unveiled their latest project: Highguard, set to be playable in just a few weeks. The gameplay trailer revealed that Highguard builds on the hero shooter mechanics of Apex Legends but takes a fresh approach, focusing on objective-based raid gameplay rather than the typical battle royale format.

The game’s narrative also shifts gears, embracing a high fantasy aesthetic complete with horses, magic, and pet familiars, while still incorporating a sci-fi twist through its diverse characters and their unique abilities. On Steam, Highguard is characterized as a “PvP raid shooter where players will ride, fight, and raid as Wardens, arcane gunslingers tasked with battling for control of a mythical continent. Players will clash with rival Warden crews for the Shieldbreaker, then infiltrate and dismantle enemy bases to claim territory in this innovative shooter.”

Unlike Apex Legends, which launched immediately upon announcement, Highguard is set to release soon, with a launch date scheduled for January 26 on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. True to the genre, it will be free-to-play.
