Fans Divided Over Supergirl Trailer, Noting Strong Guardians Influence: “Feels More Like a James Gunn Film Than Superman”

The new Supergirl trailer has sparked a variety of reactions among DC fans, but one thing is clear: it definitely channels some major Guardians of the Galaxy energy.

This isn’t too surprising, given that James Gunn, the mastermind behind Guardians, is now at the helm of DC Studios. However, it’s Craig Gillespie who is directing this film, bringing Kara Zor-El to life on the big screen.

One fan noted on Reddit, “It’s kind of funny that this feels more like a James Gunn movie than Superman did, and he didn’t even direct or write this. It has heavy Guardians Vol 1 vibes.” Another user chimed in, attributing this to the space setting, quirky characters, and the soundtrack. “The space setting helps. Guardians had very little daylight outside of the scenes on Xandar,” they added.

Many fans are feeling optimistic about the film, with one stating, “Jason Momoa as Lobo is perfect casting, plus I’m always down for Krypto being a little troublemaker… Can’t wait for this movie next summer!” Another echoed this excitement, saying, “Two DC movies in a row that I’ve become excited for. Gunn has course-corrected so effectively and quickly that it’s impressive.”

However, not everyone is thrilled with the trailer’s color grading. One fan expressed disappointment, saying, “I hate to be that guy, but the comic this is based on was one of the most colorful and beautiful cosmic space adventures I’ve seen. The art jumped off the page and made my jaw drop multiple times. This looks so bland… why is everything just grey and brown?”

Others were less enthusiastic about the trailer overall. “It looks… fine,” one user commented. “I feel like I’ve seen this all before,” another added. “And that’s okay as long as it does what it does well, which I hope it does. But the trailer isn’t doing much for me.”

Milly Alcock, known for her role in House of the Dragon, will portray Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, in the DCU Chapter One’s second major film. Superman’s cousin is set to embark on a “murderous quest for revenge” across the galaxy, joined by Krypto the Superdog, as she faces off against Matthias Schoenaerts’ Krem of the Yellow Hills.

Supergirl is set to hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
