Xbox Leader Responds to Abandoning $80 Game Pricing Strategy
Earlier this year, Microsoft revealed plans to price new games at $80, starting with The Outer Worlds 2. However, the company quickly reversed this decision, opting to sell the game for $70 and scrapping future $80 game plans. So, what led to this change? Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, shared insights on the pricing strategy, emphasizing that the shift from $80 to $70 was influenced by player feedback and a commitment to providing “player value.” He stated, “We’ve reacted in the last year, and I think for us, the real focus is going to be … meeting people where they are. I think there’s going to be less of a focus on what’s that top line price of a game, as people start to engage in different ways with games.” Booty pointed out that fixating on specific price points like $50, $60, $70, or $80 misses the broader picture. He noted that there isn’t a universal pricing strategy, and the company will keep an ear to the ground for player feedback as it determines future game prices. “From our point of view, monetization just happens in so many different ways right now. So we’re going to continue to listen to the feedback from fans. We’re going to continue to balance that with needing to run a healthy business. But right now, on the content side, we don’t have any pricing updates,” he explained. While Microsoft didn’t release any $80 games this year, it did raise prices for Xbox fans in other areas, including an increase in Xbox console prices and a significant 50% hike in the monthly cost of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Meanwhile, Nintendo has set the price for Mario Kart World at $80, claiming the game’s value justifies the cost. Additionally, it is available in a $500 hardware bundle. Looking ahead, many are speculating about the price of GTA 6, set to launch in November 2026. Some believe it could reach a $100 price tag, while others argue that its anticipated online mode might be the real revenue driver, negating the need for such a high upfront cost.
