The latest title from the Yakuza creator stars Don Lee and shares a similar vibe to the Yakuza series.
The latest project from the mind behind the Yakuza series has been unveiled at The Game Awards, and it bears a striking resemblance to its predecessor. Titled Gang of Dragon, the game features Don Lee in the lead role.
The first full trailer for the game showcases its vibrant visuals and intense action.
Gang of Dragon marks the inaugural release from Toshiro Nagoshi’s new studio, Nagoshi Studio, which was established in 2021 after Nagoshi’s exit from Sega, now operating under NetEase.
This new title seems to carry on the legacy of Nagoshi’s acclaimed Yakuza games. It boasts stunning photorealistic graphics, a tough-as-nails protagonist who can take down hordes of enemies, and a tense bar showdown.
However, Gang of Dragon does appear to introduce some fresh elements compared to the Yakuza franchise. Notably, Don Lee’s character wields an assault rifle in one of the trailer’s more explosive scenes. While firearms do make appearances in the Yakuza games, they aren’t typically a central gameplay mechanic.
Additionally, the trailer features a high-speed supercar, hinting that Gang of Dragon may incorporate driving mechanics and a stronger focus on vehicles—something the Yakuza series has generally steered clear of, aside from a few quirky instances.
Overall, the action in Gang of Dragon feels familiar yet more intense. If I had Don Lee as the star of my action game, I’d definitely highlight his powerful punches sending foes crashing into walls.
Despite the excitement surrounding the announcement, the trailer did not specify any platforms or a release date, so it might be wise to temper expectations for a quick launch.
In other news, after 16 years, Yakuza 3 is set to receive a long-awaited remake, along with a new expansion that will allow players to control one of the series’ most beloved villains for the first time.
