Ex-Director of The Last of Us Embraces Unique Game Development, Aiming for Timelessness Over Remasters

After stepping away from the gaming scene for a while, Bruce Straley, renowned for directing several Uncharted titles and The Last of Us, is making a comeback with a quirky new project called Coven of the Chicken Foot. This game emphasizes reactive companion characters, and Straley has remarked, “It’s not something that you need to do a remaster of in the next four years because the tech has already outgrown it.”

In a recent interview, Straley reflected on his legacy at Naughty Dog, the reasons behind his departure, and his recent endeavors. His comment stands out, especially since Naughty Dog has focused on remastering and remaking much of its previous work since his exit.

The gaming industry as a whole has recently adopted a more aggressive approach to revisiting and re-releasing older titles. The trend of remastering games, which gained momentum in the late 2000s, has become so prevalent that discussions about remakes and remasters are now commonplace. Given the economic challenges the industry has faced in recent years, it’s understandable that developers are leveraging advancing technology to breathe new life into beloved franchises.

Straley, however, expressed a desire to distance himself from that trend. He left Naughty Dog to avoid falling into a cycle of repetition after directing multiple entries in similar franchises and refining the studio’s signature action-adventure style.

“I got paid very well there, I got some appreciation there, but it felt like it was time to break out and try it on my own. It felt like it was time to evolve my concepts and build a new team,” Straley explained.

The outcome of his new direction? Straley’s remote studio, Wildflower Interactive, which consists of 16 members, including 12 developers, is behind Coven of the Chicken Foot. The game features an older witch named Gertie, an unexpected platforming protagonist, who is accompanied by a curious sheep-like creature that observes and reacts to the player’s actions.

Straley and his team are clearly not focused on replicating the prestige of his previous work at Naughty Dog. Instead, he seems eager to break free from that legacy, viewing it as a “fear-based mindset” that can hinder creativity.

Reflecting on his time at Naughty Dog, Straley noted that the studio had settled into a specific formula for creating games: “I just don’t have it in me. I would make a lot more money if I did!”
