Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic Likely Years from Launch
The highly anticipated RPG, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, is still a long way off. The announcement trailer unveiled at The Game Awards 2025 certainly thrilled fans of Knights of the Old Republic, but the reality is that the game, helmed by Casey Hudson—director of the original KOTOR and Mass Effect—is in the very early stages of development. Hudson’s new venture, Arcanaut Studios, was established this year following the closure of his previous studio in November 2024. The studio is currently looking to fill several senior positions, making the trailer not just a teaser but also a recruitment tool, a common strategy among developers.
Given the lengthy development timelines for major titles today, it may be years before we see any substantial progress on Fate of the Old Republic, and even longer until its release. It’s entirely reasonable to be skeptical about the game launching within this decade. Hudson himself acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating, “We’re still early in development, with many challenges ahead. I’m grateful to have enjoyed the support of KOTOR fans for many years, and I look forward to embarking upon this journey together, sharing more of what we’re doing as soon as we can!”
Since his time on the original KOTOR, Hudson has maintained a connection with Lucasfilm, and the chance to create a new title in the Star Wars universe emerged after the founding of Arcanaut. While details about the game’s premise are limited, it won’t be a direct sequel to Knights of the Old Republic. Instead, Hudson promises an “all-new story” featuring fresh characters, designed to capture the player agency and immersion that defined KOTOR. The Old Republic has been in the spotlight recently, with reports of a KOTOR 2 remake that was once in the works but has since been shelved. Additionally, The Game Awards 2025 also showcased a new title, Star Wars: Galactic Racer.
