2026: A Pivotal Year for Game of Thrones

A new sizzle reel has announced that 2026 is set to be the “biggest year ever” for HBO Max, featuring footage from around 17 new titles coming to the platform next year. Among these are two shows tied to the Game of Thrones universe: the third season of House of the Dragon and the debut of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a six-episode series that follows the adventures of the naive knight Ser Duncan “Dunk” The Tall and his squire, Egg.

With HBO confirming Game of Thrones-related content through 2028, this year is significant for the franchise created by George R.R. Martin. However, despite House of the Dragon adapting some of the most compelling stories from Fire & Blood, the excitement surrounding the series has waned compared to previous years. The long-awaited Winds of Winter novel remains elusive, and with fierce competition from other shows on the platform, the brand’s prominence may be fading.

In the promotional video, Alicent Hightower states, “Rhaenyra will do what she has to do. And what she has to do is dire,” as scenes unfold showing her comforting her son Aemond Targaryen, a battle in a coliseum, and a skull in a fireplace. Showrunner Ryan Condal promises that season 3 will be “goddamn massive,” plunging into the Targaryen civil war hinted at the end of season 2. The conflict is set to escalate as Rhaenyra and her dragon riders make their move on King’s Landing to confront Aemond, the prince who nearly killed his brother in his quest for the Iron Throne.

The footage also teases a variety of other exciting shows coming to HBO Max, including The Pitt, Euphoria, Lanterns, Dune: Prophecy, Hacks, an untitled Larry David project, and more. With such a lineup arriving in 2026, will Westeros be able to stand out amidst all this competition?
