Creator Confirms Live-Action Sequel to Over the Garden Wall is Set to Launch

If you’re diving into this, there’s a solid chance you’ve revisited *Over the Garden Wall* at least once between October 1 and Thanksgiving this year. This charmingly eerie animated miniseries has become a beloved seasonal ritual for many, who cherish its stunning visuals, hauntingly beautiful soundtrack, and cozy autumn atmosphere. Since its debut in 2014, creator Patrick McHale has explored a few spinoff projects, including various comics and even a stop-motion short from Aardman Animations, but nothing has truly captured the essence of a direct follow-up. However, there may still be hope.

In 2020, I had the opportunity to chat with McHale for a retrospective on *Over the Garden Wall*, where he mentioned plans for a “spiritual successor” that “comes from a similar place in my heart and brain.” Fast forward five years, and fans are still waiting. So, when I interviewed McHale again about his new project, *The Elephant* (more on that soon), I had to inquire if this was the long-awaited successor or if it was still in development.

“No, this was definitely not that spiritual sequel, haha,” McHale shared via email. “That other project is still waiting impatiently in its egg, ready to hatch. If anybody with millions of dollars reads this and wants to fund a live-action & puppet hybrid film that’s a wintertime spiritual sequel (of sorts) to *Over the Garden Wall*, please reach out.”

For those eagerly anticipating a follow-up to *Over the Garden Wall*, McHale’s words are sure to spark excitement. The idea of blending live-action with puppetry is captivating, and transitioning from the fall setting to winter would seamlessly complement the original series. Unfortunately, it seems we’re still a ways off from this spiritual successor becoming a reality. But if you happen to have a few million dollars lying around, consider supporting McHale—many fans would be incredibly grateful.

*Over the Garden Wall* is available for streaming on Hulu. *The Elephant* airs on December 19 at 11 p.m. Eastern Time on Adult Swim, and will be available on HBO Max starting December 20.
