I evaluated 15 Switch 2 cases, and here are my top picks.
It might feel a bit disheartening to stash your beloved Switch 2 in a protective case, but for me, it’s a relief. While it may slightly detract from the console’s sleek design, a case alleviates the anxiety of scratches and potential damage. Since the Switch 2’s launch in June, I’ve experimented with various cases, from lightweight shells that snap on for basic scratch protection to more robust carrying cases that safeguard the console when it’s not in action.
I quickly discovered a standout option, but that hasn’t stopped me from exploring new offerings from both well-known and lesser-known brands. There’s a case for every gamer and every budget.
I have high expectations for form-fitting cases designed for the Switch 2 during gameplay. However, the criteria for carrying cases are more relaxed; they simply need to protect the console and ideally offer added features like storage for cables or game cartridges.
As for my top pick, I wanted a case that excels in both handheld and docked modes, which is why I believe the Dbrand Killswitch is the best overall choice. While it may be pricier than some would prefer, the protection and versatility it provides justify the investment.
The Killswitch starts at $59.95 and includes Joy-Con 2 grips, a rear cover for the console, and a small piece for the kickstand, all securely attached. It also comes with one of Dbrand’s skins, ensuring everything stays in place.
One downside is that the Killswitch prevents the Switch 2 from fitting into the dock. However, Dbrand provides an adapter that acts as an extender for the USB-C port, allowing for docking functionality. While it leaves the screen exposed, it’s a clever workaround that I can overlook for the sake of maintaining docking capabilities.
For most Switch 2 users, especially those who frequently toss their console into a bag, I recommend the $79.85 “Travel” tier. This version includes a semi-transparent cover that protects the front of the console when not in use, secured by a bungee cord latch. It also comes with analog stick grips and a tray for 10 game cartridges.
Initially, Dbrand was updating the Killswitch to prevent the Joy-Con 2 magnets from detaching too easily. They redesigned the grips to address this issue, and previous buyers can request a free replacement. New customers will receive the updated version, which I can confirm resolves the problem.
For those seeking a more budget-friendly alternative, the Jsaux Split Protective Case is available for $29.99. It features detachable Joy-Con 2 grips and a thin transparent shell that allows the console to fit into the dock. It also includes a hard front cover for screen protection and storage for 10 cartridges.
While the Jsaux case has some minor drawbacks, such as smaller grips and slightly lower build quality, it remains a solid choice for its price. However, it shares a similar issue with the Killswitch regarding the potential for the Joy-Con to detach if shaken vigorously.
When it comes to carrying cases, Tomtoc’s FancyCase Slim has become my favorite. Priced between $33 and $39, it offers better protection than some other options. Its design includes raised sections to prevent accidental pressing of the Joy-Con 2’s analog sticks while the console is stored. Although it lacks additional storage features, it stands out for its durability and style.
For those looking for a premium option, WaterField Designs’ CitySlicker case is a luxurious choice at $129. It fits snugly around the console and includes pockets for accessories, but it may not provide as much protection as bulkier cases.
PowerA’s Slim Case is a simple, affordable option at $19.99. While it doesn’t offer heavy-duty protection, it’s lightweight and includes storage for 10 cartridges. It also avoids the common issue of pressing on the Joy-Con 2 joysticks from the outside.
Belkin’s slim case, priced at $29.99, offers a more stylish design with better materials, a carrying strap, and additional storage options. It can hold 12 cartridges and features grooves to protect the Joy-Con 2 triggers.
If you’re looking for a grip case for handheld mode, the Killswitch is ideal as it allows for Joy-Con removal and includes a dock adapter. For those who rarely dock their Switch 2, the Spigen Rugged Armor is a solid all-in-one shell that protects the console from scratches and drops, though it requires removal for docking.
Looking ahead, Jsaux has introduced the ModCase for the Switch 2, which features a comfortable grip design but sacrifices Joy-Con removal and kickstand access. The Ultimate tier includes accessories like a battery pack strap and a magnetic arm for attaching a phone.
I’ll be sharing more detailed impressions of the Jsaux ModCase in a future update.
