Lidar Company Luminar Enters Bankruptcy Proceedings

Luminar, the lidar company that gained traction during the self-driving car boom with partnerships with major automakers like Volvo and Mercedes-Benz, has filed for bankruptcy. The firm has been embroiled in a legal dispute with its founder and former CEO, Austin Russell, who was removed from his position earlier this year following an ethics investigation.

As part of its bankruptcy proceedings, Luminar is looking to sell its lidar and semiconductor divisions, with a deal already in place to sell the semiconductor business to Quantum Computing for $110 million. The company intends to keep operating during the bankruptcy process to ensure the continued delivery of its LiDAR hardware and software. However, Luminar is set to cease operations once the process concludes.

“Our main focus during this transition is to maintain the quality, reliability, and service that our customers expect from us,” stated CEO Paul Ricci.

Founded in 2017, Luminar quickly established itself as a leading provider of lidar systems, essential technology for autonomous vehicles that helps them detect and measure the distance to surrounding objects. The company has supplied sensors to various automotive giants, including Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, Audi, Toyota Research Institute, Caterpillar, and even Tesla, which has opted for traditional cameras over lidar. Luminar was valued at nearly $3 billion when it went public via a reverse merger with a SPAC in 2020.

The past few years have been challenging for Luminar. Alongside Russell’s departure, the company has undergone multiple rounds of layoffs as it attempted to restructure. Russell made a comeback attempt earlier this year, seeking to regain control of the company by acquiring all of its Class A shares through his new venture, Russell AI Labs. This turmoil led Volvo to announce it would exclude Luminar lidar from its 2026 models due to a shortage of the hardware.
