Larian Studios Embraces Generative AI Amid Internal Concerns: ‘Most of the Team Supports Our Approach’
Larian Studios is clearly optimistic about the potential of generative AI. Despite some pushback from fans and even a few team members, studio head Swen Vincke has stated that the creators of Baldur’s Gate 3 are leveraging this technology to brainstorm ideas and prototype new content.
Reports indicate that Larian has been actively utilizing generative AI for various tasks, including creating PowerPoint presentations, generating placeholder text, and even developing concept art. While some staff may have reservations, Vincke believes that the majority of the team supports the current approach.
“I think at this point everyone at the company is more or less OK with the way we’re using it,” he mentioned.
Vincke also assured that no generative AI will be included in any final products, such as the studio’s upcoming turn-based RPG. “Everything is human actors; we’re writing everything ourselves,” he stated.
This aligns with Vincke’s earlier views on AI, emphasizing that human creativity remains the cornerstone of exceptional games. He noted that relying on AI for finished products wouldn’t provide a competitive edge, as it would become widely accessible. “If the baseline goes up because generation is available to everybody? Fine, that’s a new reality that we’re in. But you’re still gonna wanna create something special on top of that, and I think that’s where teams like us will make the difference.”
Vincke criticized the notion that AI could replace human talent, asserting that while AI tools can enhance game development, they won’t diminish the artistry involved. He previously discussed using AI to identify plot inconsistencies in complex narratives, but this is a far cry from using AI to create content like concept art or placeholder text.
Earlier this year, a minor incident involving AI-generated content in The Alter sparked controversy among players, highlighting the fine line between creativity and plagiarism when using AI tools.
