Larian CEO Addresses AI Backlash, Emphasizes Commitment to Exploring Cutting-Edge Technology

Larian Studios CEO Swen Vincke has quickly addressed a report claiming the developer of Baldur’s Gate 3 is heavily investing in AI, emphasizing that the situation isn’t as dire as suggested.

“Guys, we’re not ‘pushing hard’ for or replacing concept artists with AI,” Vincke stated on Twitter. The report mentioned that under his leadership, Larian has been exploring generative AI, but confirmed that AI-generated assets won’t be featured in the upcoming Divinity title.

Vincke clarified, “I was specifically asked about concept art and our use of Gen AI. I mentioned we use it for exploration, not for developing concept art. Our artists handle that, and they are truly world-class.”

He likened AI tools to “Google and art books,” explaining that during the initial brainstorming phases, they might use AI for rough outlines, which are then replaced with original artwork. He reiterated this point in a statement, noting, “We are researching and understanding the cutting edge of machine learning as a creative tool to enhance our workflow, ultimately allowing us to create better games.”

Acknowledging the emotional responses surrounding the topic, he added, “It’s something we are continuously discussing internally, focusing on improving everyone’s work experience, not diminishing it.”

In the meantime, a former environment artist from Larian shared their thoughts on Bluesky, stating, “I loved working at Larian until AI. Please reconsider and change your direction, like, yesterday.”

Despite the initial concerns, Larian is indeed utilizing AI in the development of Divinity, but it won’t be visible in the final product: “Everything is performed by human actors; we’re writing everything ourselves.”
