A Tough Day for M3GAN Fans
It’s clear that M3GAN 2.0, the follow-up to the wildly popular sci-fi horror flick featuring a killer robot, didn’t perform well at the box office. While the first film grossed an impressive $180 million, the sequel barely scraped together $40 million. This stark contrast suggests that the initial film was a standout success for this quirky horror series.
For fans like me who were excited about the potential for a M3GAN cinematic universe, the disappointing performance of M3GAN 2.0 has also impacted its spin-off, Soulm8te, which has been removed from Universal Pictures’ release schedule.
Directed by Kate Dolan, this psychological thriller centers on a man who, after losing his wife, builds a sentient AI android to fill the void. However, in true sci-fi horror style, his creation turns dangerous, leading to dire consequences for him and those around him.
Soulm8te was intended to exist within the same universe as M3GAN, which raises eyebrows considering the chaos caused by a child’s toy turned weapon of mass destruction. It makes you wonder why anyone would want to create a sentient lovebot in that world.
With no marketing beyond a teaser trailer and an original release date set for January 8, 2026, Universal Pictures and Blumhouse’s choice to pull Soulm8te from the calendar isn’t shocking. Reports indicate that the film may be pitched to other studios, suggesting it could eventually see the light of day, but likely not in the near future.
In a recent podcast, Blumhouse founder Jason Blum shared his thoughts on the sequel’s poor performance. He mentioned, “We all thought Megan was like Superman. We could do anything to her. We could change genres. We could put her in the summer. We could make her look different. We could turn her from a bad guy into a good guy. And we classically overthought how powerful people’s engagement was with her.”
We can’t help but agree. While it was entertaining to see M3GAN undergo a superhero-like transformation in the sequel, it strayed far from the sci-fi horror vibe that endeared her to fans in the first place. We appreciate a good blend of action, sci-fi, and comedy, but M3GAN had captured the hearts of horror enthusiasts, and what they got in 2025 was a significant departure from that original concept.
Nonetheless, the premise of Soulm8te was intriguing, and unlike M3GAN 2.0, it was positioned as a psychological horror-thriller. Could this have been the film that would have revitalized the M3GAN cinematic universe? Only time will tell.
