“BioWare Design Pioneer Departs as Studio Develops Ambitious Mass Effect Successor”
James Ohlen joined Wizards of the Coast in 2019 after a remarkable 22-year career at BioWare, where he was tasked with developing a new IP for the tabletop gaming giant. Fast forward six years, and after co-founding Archetype Entertainment to deliver a visually stunning RPG titled Exodus, he will no longer lead the studio when the game is set to launch in 2027.
According to Hasbro’s VP of Communications, Abby Hodes, Ohlen felt his contributions to the game were complete and that the team was well-equipped to handle the final polishing and tuning. He has decided to shift his creative focus while remaining a consultant for the company in the realm of tabletop gaming.
James Ohlen is well-known for his role as the lead designer on iconic titles like Baldur’s Gate 1 & 2, Dragon Age: Origins, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. His influence is so significant that he’s often referred to as the “godfather of BioWare design.” Without his vision, we might not have seen the emergence of Baldur’s Gate 3 or many other beloved titles.
Exodus recently showcased a new trailer during the Game Awards 2025, highlighting elements that fans adored in Mass Effect, such as intricate relationships with NPCs. However, it introduces a unique time dilation mechanic, allowing players to see the consequences of their choices when they revisit locations decades or even centuries later. This ambitious project, which began during the pandemic, is still a couple of years away from release, likely contributing to its extended development timeline.
Beyond being a potential new franchise, Exodus represents a vast universe that Hasbro aims to leverage for additional products. Earlier this year, Wizards released an Exodus tabletop RPG book and is likely exploring opportunities for trading card games and TV adaptations, especially if the game achieves success akin to other major hits.
Additionally, reports indicate that Ohlen’s departure coincides with Blizzard veteran Paul Della Bitta taking the helm of Wizards’ Digital Ventures division, under the leadership of fellow Blizzard alum John Hight. Archetype still boasts a strong roster of BioWare veterans, including Chad Robertson and Drew Karpyshyn, ensuring that the studio retains its rich legacy in game development.
