Hideo Kojima Envisions Games Designed to Delight AI and Explore Weightlessness

When Hideo Kojima, the mastermind behind Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid, shares his vision for future games, he mentions concepts like “a game played in weightlessness” and “a game that delights an AI.” While he elaborates on the latter, it’s a bit disappointing that he doesn’t dive deeper into the former.

In a recent interview, Kojima acknowledges that these ideas might seem a bit out there. “This might be out there,” he admits. “But I think I want to make ‘a game played in weightlessness’ and ‘a game that delights an AI.'”

Although he doesn’t expand on the anti-gravity concept, he provides more insight into his AI-focused idea. “Basically, a game that could train an AI. At the moment, AI doesn’t know much, and I think it has to study more. It would be a game that serves as teaching material for AI to learn. In five or ten years, I definitely expect AI to explore many different worlds.”

Kojima seems to believe that AI is here to stay, likening the current skepticism around it to the initial backlash against smartphones. “When smartphones came out, everyone slated them,” he points out. “But now there are so many people who can’t live without their smartphones. AI is like that. It’s important to use technology in a way that will make us happy, while considering the correct direction it should take.”

Hideo Kojima also mentions that Death Stranding 2 is designed to be more accessible than the original, addressing two “major drop-off points” that previously hindered players from reaching the end.
