Fortnite Insider Aims to Spoil Harry Potter Reveal Over J.K. Rowling’s Controversial Views on Transgender Issues
Fortnite is set to dive into the Wizarding World, adding Harry Potter-themed cosmetics to its ever-expanding roster. The game has become a global sensation, leading to numerous leak accounts on social media that frequently share news about upcoming collaborations. However, the account that revealed the Harry Potter skins had a different agenda; they expressed their intent to “spoil” the surprise as a form of protest against the inclusion, citing the transphobic comments made by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling.
Rowling has been a prominent figure in the debate over trans rights in recent years, complicating the experience for fans and supporters of the franchise when it comes to purchasing related media, including video games. Despite this, Hogwarts Legacy has achieved over 40 million sales since its release in 2023.
With the announcement of Harry Potter content coming to Fortnite, fans of both franchises are grappling with whether to support the crossover. A leaker known as Fortnite Underground, who disclosed the Harry Potter collaboration, shared a detailed explanation on X about their decision to leak the information ahead of the official reveal. They expressed a desire to “ruin” the surprise as a protest, recalling a time when Fortnite was seen as a champion of positive values.
“Most people won’t care,” they noted. “These outfits will likely sell well, and many will be excited to see a beloved childhood franchise in the game, resulting in profits for both Epic Games and J.K. Rowling.
But I’m not okay with that, and I hope you’re not okay with it either.”
Fortnite Underground concluded their message by stating they hoped to diminish sales of the collaboration, but many responses suggested that any discussion surrounding it could inadvertently promote it. While their intention might spark important conversations within the Fortnite community, the replies also included a fair share of transphobic remarks, with some users declaring their intent to purchase the Harry Potter cosmetics as a form of counter-protest. It might be best to steer clear of the comments on their post.
