The top foldable smartphone on the market
A foldable phone is not for the timid. These devices tend to be heavier, more expensive, and often come with cameras that don’t quite match the capabilities of traditional smartphones. While they’ve improved in durability, they still can’t quite compete with standard models. However, thanks to recent advancements, we now have foldable phones that can handle a day at the beach without fear.
Currently, there are two main types of foldables: book-style and clamshell-style, reminiscent of classic flip phones. Think of book-style foldables as a hybrid of a phone and a tablet, while clamshells combine the functionality of a phone with the convenience of a smartwatch. Book foldables feature an outer screen for everyday tasks and a larger inner screen for when you need more real estate. Clamshells, on the other hand, have a smaller outer display for quick checks, allowing you to unfold the device for more extensive use.
While both types fall under the foldable umbrella, they cater to different preferences: one for those who want a more expansive phone experience and another for those who prefer a more compact option. Regardless of your choice, it’s wise to consider an extended warranty, as repairs can be costly and not all repair shops will handle these devices. If you skip the warranty, make sure you’re ready to replace your phone if it meets an unfortunate fate, like a sand mishap. Folding screens can be particularly vulnerable.
If you’re still intrigued, you’re likely the type who will enjoy the unique experience a foldable offers. Having tested a variety of devices, I can confidently say that folding phones are among my favorites. You can run multiple apps simultaneously, prop it up like a mini laptop, or even use it like a camcorder for video recording. The excitement of folding your phone shut never really fades.
Best book-style foldable
Google Pixel Pro 10 Fold
– Screen: 8-inch, 2076p, 120Hz OLED inner screen; 6.4-inch, 1080p, 120Hz OLED cover screen
– Processor: Google Tensor G5
– Cameras: 48MP f/1.7 main with OIS; 10.8MP 5x telephoto with OIS; 10.5MP ultrawide; 10MP selfie (cover screen); 10MP inner selfie camera
– Battery: 5,015mAh
– Charging: 30W wired, 15W wireless (Qi2)
– Weather resistance: IP68
Durability has always been a key concern for foldables, and the Pixel 10 Pro Fold represents a significant step forward. With an IP68 rating, it’s the first foldable to offer full water and dust resistance, allowing you to take it on outdoor adventures without worrying about damage from sand or water. Coupled with Qi2 support for accessories and wireless charging, along with Google’s powerful Tensor G5 chip, it stands out as a top-tier foldable.
However, it’s not without its drawbacks. While it can last all day with light use of the inner display, heavy usage will likely drain the battery by nightfall. Additionally, despite its improved durability, the camera performance, particularly in low light, doesn’t quite match that of Google’s other 10 Pro models. It’s also a bit heavier and thicker than the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which is a trade-off for added peace of mind.
Best flip-style foldable
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7
– Screen: 6.9-inch, 1080p, 120Hz OLED inner screen; 4.1-inch, 948p, OLED cover screen
– Processor: Samsung Exynos 2500
– Cameras: 50MP f/1.8 main with OIS; 12MP ultrawide; 10MP selfie (inner screen)
– Battery: 4,300mAh
– Charging: 25W wired, 15W wireless, 4.5W reverse wireless
– Weather-resistance rating: IP48
The Galaxy Z Flip 7 may not have the same flair as the latest Razr Ultra, but it brings some fresh features to the table. Samsung has upgraded the cover screen to a stunning 4.1-inch edge-to-edge display, providing more space for quick interactions without needing to open the phone.
In addition to the larger cover screen, the Flip 7 is thinner than its predecessor and sports a larger 4,300mAh battery, an upgrade from the previous model’s 4,000mAh. While the camera system remains unchanged, the 50MP main camera still delivers impressive shots, and the flip design allows for creative selfies using the rear camera.
Despite these improvements, the Flip 7 retains the same IP48 rating as its predecessor, which raises concerns about long-term durability against dust. However, Samsung backs it up with a solid warranty and repair program, along with seven years of OS and security updates. While it’s not flawless, it’s the most refined version yet—just be careful not to drop it while relaxing on the beach.
The most fun foldable
Motorola Razr Ultra (2025)
– Screen: 7-inch 1224p OLED 165Hz inner screen; 4-inch 1080p OLED 165Hz outer screen
– Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite
– Cameras: 50MP f/1.8 main with OIS; 50MP f/2.0 ultrawide; 50MP f/2.0 selfie
– Battery: 4,700mAh
– Charging: 68W wired, 30W wireless
– Weather-resistance rating: IP48
The Razr Ultra is the latest and most advanced addition to Motorola’s foldable lineup. Compared to the Razr Plus, it features a higher-resolution inner screen, Qualcomm’s top mobile processor, double the storage, and an enhanced selfie camera. Its elegant design, with a gold-bronze chassis and wooden back panel, makes it one of the most visually appealing phones available.
Beyond aesthetics, the Ultra is a joy to use. The expansive 4-inch outer screen is perfect for notifications, messaging, and quick tasks. The upgraded titanium hinge enhances durability compared to the stainless steel of the Razr Plus. However, it still faces issues with inconsistent camera processing, and Motorola’s promise of only three OS upgrades and four years of security updates feels a bit short for a device priced at $1,300.
The best battery life in a foldable
Oppo Find N5
– Screen: 8.12-inch, 2248p, 120Hz OLED inner screen; 6.62-inch, 1140p, 120Hz OLED outer screen
– Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite
– Cameras: 50MP f/1.9 main with OIS; 50MP 3x telephoto with OIS; 8MP ultrawide; 8MP selfie cameras (inner and outer)
– Battery: 5,600mAh
– Charging: 80W wired, 50W wireless
– Weather-resistance rating: IPX8/IPX9
Unfortunately, if you’re in the US or Europe, the Oppo Find N5 is off-limits. But for those in China, Singapore, or select Asian countries, this sleek book-style foldable is a dream come true.
The Find N5 isn’t just about its slim profile; it packs a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, is fully water-resistant, and boasts impressive battery life. Its silicon-carbon battery technology allows for a substantial 5,600mAh capacity, easily lasting through a day of heavy use. Remarkably, it remains only slightly thicker than a standard smartphone, making it comfortable to use and carry. If only more of us could get our hands on it.
Other foldables to consider
– The latest Huawei Mate XTs deserves a nod for its impressive design. As Huawei’s second trifold phone, it features minor upgrades over the original, which was already a solid foldable but pricey. The new model is cheaper at 17,999 yuan (about $2,520) and includes stylus support, an upgraded Kirin 9020 chipset, and a better 40MP ultrawide camera.
– The Motorola Razr Plus 2025 is a fresh take on last year’s model. While they look similar, the Razr Plus 2025 features a titanium hinge for improved durability and a less noticeable crease. It also offers IP48 dust and water resistance, a step up from the previous model’s IPX8 rating. Though we haven’t tested it yet, it seems like a solid alternative to the Ultra.
– The standard Motorola Razr 2025 is a more budget-friendly entry into foldables, starting at $699. It offers enhanced performance, battery life, and durability, with a smaller cover screen but a spacious 6.9-inch internal display. While we haven’t tested it, its price point makes it an attractive option for those looking to dive into the foldable market.
– The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is a fantastic alternative to the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. It’s slim and lightweight at just 8.9mm thick when closed, nearly matching standard smartphones. The spacious inner display is perfect for multitasking, and the battery can last a full day with moderate use. However, it starts at $1,999 and lacks full dust and water resistance, which could leave the hinge vulnerable.
What’s coming next
Samsung has finally unveiled the Z TriFold, set to launch in the first quarter of 2026 in the US. This innovative device features two hinges, allowing it to open up to reveal a 10-inch inner screen. The outer display measures 6.5 inches and maintains a standard 21:9 aspect ratio. It also boasts a ceramic-glass, fiber-reinforced polymer back panel designed to resist cracking, along with an IP48 rating for water resistance, though it’s not dust-tight.
