Perfect Dark Star Shares Thoughts on Game’s Cancellation
Alix Wilton-Regan has been announced as the new voice of Lara Croft, stepping in for Camila Luddington for the upcoming entries in the series. In a recent interview, she expressed her concerns about the future, especially after the cancellation of the Perfect Dark reboot, in which she was also involved. While filming her scenes as Joanna Dark alongside her work on the new Tomb Raider titles, she described that period as “wonderful and genuinely one of the most creatively exciting times of my life.” However, the cancellation of Perfect Dark left her feeling anxious about the stability of the Tomb Raider franchise. “I just felt so relieved that I still had Lara, but I also felt really frightened about losing Lara. I’m still frightened of losing Lara,” she admitted.
Wilton-Regan also shared her shock regarding the Perfect Dark situation and the closure of developer The Initiative. “I was as shocked, surprised, and devastated as everyone else was when the funding was pulled, and the studio was closed,” she said. “I did not see it coming. I was absolutely blindsided when the project was defunded.” She noted that she had been actively working on Perfect Dark scenes throughout 2023, 2024, and even into 2025, right up until Microsoft’s announcement in July 2025 that the project would be shelved. “To my knowledge, we were pretty far along. I’d done entire chapters of this universe.” She believed that Microsoft was “really happy” with the progress made by The Initiative up to that point.
There were discussions about Take-Two, the parent company of GTA, potentially acquiring Perfect Dark to keep it alive, but those negotiations ultimately fell through. “That was the day I was really sad because that was the day I lost hope,” Wilton-Regan reflected. Looking ahead, she mentioned that a remake of the original Tomb Raider, titled Legacy of Atlantis, is set for release in 2026, followed by a brand-new game called Catalyst in 2027.
