Long-running JRPG series returns to remakes as player base declines, says Trails producer seeking a fresh start.
The developers behind the beloved Trails series are currently focusing on remakes due to a decline in their player base over the years.
Having been around for over two decades, the Trails series is a remarkable achievement in the gaming world. Its connection to the broader The Legend of Heroes series, which started in the 1980s, adds to its impressive legacy. However, the team is now prioritizing remakes to attract back players who may have drifted away during the past 21 years.
Following the release of the remade Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter this year and the announcement of Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter set for next year, Nihon Falcom’s president, Toshihiro Kondo, addressed shareholders about the decision to revisit these two-decade-old titles before wrapping up the ongoing storyline.
Kondo noted, “It’s become clear that the player base is dwindling. Our player base was shrinking, and the development team needed a breather.” He pointed out that the decline in sales can be partly attributed to the series’ early exclusivity on PlayStation, as Sony has lost significant market share in Japan to Nintendo. This shift is reflected in the new remakes being available on PlayStation, Switch, Switch 2, and PC.
Before diving into the potential conclusion of the Trails saga, Nihon Falcom opted to remake Trails in the Sky, hoping to rekindle interest from former fans and attract new players ahead of the anticipated finale.
