Hideo Kojima: There’s No Turning Back from AI, Just Like with Smartphones

Legendary director Hideo Kojima has drawn a parallel between the emergence of AI and the advent of smartphones, expressing concern that the convenience AI brings might lead to us becoming overly reliant.

In a recent interview, Kojima shared insights on the public’s skepticism towards AI. “When smartphones first appeared, they faced a lot of criticism,” he noted. “Now, many people can’t imagine life without them. AI is similar. It’s crucial to harness technology in ways that enhance our happiness… Arguing against AI or deeming it useless is pointless. We can’t turn back, just like with smartphones.”

Kojima’s works, including Death Stranding and its sequel, delve into themes of communication and human connection. He believes that, akin to smartphones, AI will transform how we interact, potentially offering significant advantages, especially for those dealing with social anxiety.

“The proliferation of AI could significantly alter our communication methods,” Kojima remarked. “For individuals who struggle with face-to-face interactions, AI might help bridge that gap, allowing them to form closer relationships… It would certainly be convenient.”

Despite his optimism about the technology’s potential, Kojima remains cautious about its impact on human interaction. He advocates for setting boundaries on AI usage. “I worry that humans might become spoiled,” he said. “We should consider limiting AI’s role or designating days where we refrain from using it.”

Kojima, the creative mind behind Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid, aspires to create “a game that delights an AI” and “a game played in weightlessness.”
