Exodus Studio Leader Resigns Following Major Game Awards Trailer Release
James Ohlen, a veteran from Bioware and the driving force behind the upcoming sci-fi RPG Exodus, has stepped down as the head of Archetype Entertainment. His departure follows the studio’s recent unveiling of an exciting new trailer at The Game Awards, with Ohlen stating that he feels his contributions to the game are complete. Since Archetype’s inception in 2019, he has been at the helm, guiding the development of Exodus. According to a statement from Hasbro, “At this stage, James felt his work on the game was complete and that the polishing and tuning were in great hands with the team.”
Exodus is still a ways off, with a release date set for early 2027, which is quite a lengthy timeline, especially since the game is already in the polishing phase. The latest trailer showcased the journey of the main character, Jun Aslan. Although Ohlen is stepping back from his role at Archetype, he will continue to work with Wizards of the Coast as a creative consultant for tabletop RPGs, having requested to shift his creative focus.
Ohlen had initially planned to retire from the gaming industry in 2018 after leaving Bioware and even started his own tabletop company. However, he was drawn back into the fold by a compelling offer from Wizards to lead Archetype, which promised him greater creative freedom. Despite his exit, Archetype still has a strong roster of former Bioware talent, including VP and general manager Chad Robertson and lead writer Drew Karpyshyn. With its roots in beloved sci-fi RPGs like Mass Effect, both the studio and fans are optimistic that Exodus will capture a similar magic.
