Baldur’s Gate 3 director battles to remove a pesky squirrel from Divinity: Original Sin 2, but the character refuses to go away.
We can all agree that the squirrels in Larian Studios games are fantastic, right? Well, not everyone feels that way—especially Swen Vincke, the studio’s founder and a key game director. He had such a strong dislike for one particular furry friend in *Divinity: Original Sin 2* that he launched a solo mission to have it removed, but ultimately, he didn’t succeed.
In a chat, he shared his feelings about the beloved character, Sir Lora. “It’s funny that you like Sir Lora. I hate him. If there’s one thing I regret about *Original Sin 2*, it’s bringing Sir Lora into the game,” he admitted. “I really tried to get rid of him.”
Vincke’s sentiments aren’t entirely unique. Sir Lora was added late in development due to pressure from a publisher who wanted free DLC for the console version. This woodland companion turned into a “joke that doesn’t really add anything” to the sequel.
“We regretted bringing Sir Lora in because it only happened due to publisher pressure,” he explained. “And now we just want to get rid of him. But it’s okay; it makes me happy that you enjoy him. There are people who put a lot of effort into creating him.”
As the team prepared for the Switch 2, PS5, and Xbox Series X release, Vincke attempted to rectify this publisher-driven decision by removing Sir Lora, but QA informed him it was “too late” due to unexpected structural issues.
“We couldn’t figure out why. Sir Lora just wouldn’t die. We lost several days debugging to find an answer to that. Now it’s too late, so we have to keep him,” Vincke noted. While they managed to remove Sir Lora from one aspect, he continued to appear in other areas, and time and resources were limited for the port.
The re-release of *Divinity: Original Sin 2* is now available, giving players plenty of time to enjoy Sir Lora before the next installment in the series arrives.
