“Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Lead Emphasizes Passion for Game Development Over Expansion”

With Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 racking up impressive accolades, including the Golden Joystick Awards and recognition at the Game Awards 2025, Sandfall Interactive seems focused on what lies ahead—though it appears their future won’t stray far from their current path.

In a recent discussion, director Guillaume Broche hinted at this direction when asked if their next title would be a “larger-scale production” compared to Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. “No, I think it’s good to have limitations when you are creative,” he stated. “It’s the best way to be the best version of yourself.” Despite having the resources to expand, the studio has no plans to do so.

“We could scale up now that we have a lot more money, but I would say it’s not tempting for us,” Broche explained. “Because even the management team and myself, we’d have to be hands-on and doing things for ourselves.”

It seems that managing a larger operation isn’t their priority. “We love making games more than we love managing, so we want to keep doing that. These past five years were some of the best of my life, and I want to be happy like that again.”

Broche and his team are making a wise choice. Just look at the success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Sandfall Interactive has proven it can deliver outstanding games without needing to scale up. It’s not every day that a smaller studio—at least in the broader industry context—achieves such remarkable success.

The anticipation for what comes next from these FRPG innovators is palpable. Will their next project feature turn-based combat and an incredible soundtrack, much like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33? Only time will reveal the answer, but I, for one, am eager to find out.
