Kojima: “There’s No Turning Back on AI”
Hideo Kojima, the renowned writer-director, has shared his insights on AI, asserting that the technology is here to stay and that “we can’t go back.” In a conversation with an outlet, Kojima remarked, “Now there are so many people who can’t live without their smartphones. AI is like that.” He emphasized that dismissing AI as unnecessary or harmful is futile, drawing parallels to the inevitability of smartphones in our lives. This perspective resonates with recent comments from Kingdom Come’s Daniel Vavra, who stated, “It’s time to face reality. AI is here to stay with us. As frightening as it may be, that’s the way it is.”
Kojima also discussed the potential for AI to transform communication, suggesting it could assist individuals with social anxiety in navigating face-to-face interactions. However, he cautioned that users should be aware of their AI consumption. Previously, he encouraged embracing AI as a beneficial tool for managing repetitive tasks, allowing creators to channel their energy into more innovative endeavors.
Not everyone shares Kojima’s optimism; a producer from Silent Hill f expressed skepticism, arguing that AI lacks the capacity for the “bold choices” that humans can make. Concerns about AI are widespread, with discussions around job displacement and the environmental ramifications of AI infrastructure development. Additionally, concept artists in the gaming industry have noted that generative AI doesn’t necessarily simplify their work. Recently, Larian’s CEO Swen Vincke stirred the pot with his remarks on AI, stating that crucial context was “lost in translation” and promising to address the topic further in January.
