Gemini Won’t Be Taking Over Google Assistant on Android Anytime Soon

Google is holding off on fully replacing Assistant with Gemini on Android devices for now. The company announced that it will “continue our work to upgrade Assistant users to Gemini on mobile devices into 2026,” pushing back the original timeline that aimed for a switch by the end of 2025.

“We’re adjusting our previously announced timeline to ensure a smooth transition,” Google stated. Once the shift from Google Assistant is finalized, users will lose access to the voice assistant on devices that meet the minimum requirements for Gemini. Additionally, the Google Assistant app will no longer be available for download.

Gemini has already made its way to Wear OS smartwatches, Android Auto, and Nest and Google Home devices. This year, Google has taken steps to integrate Gemini into Android by allowing users to make phone calls, set timers, and send messages through Gemini without needing to enable Gemini Apps Activity. This update lets users enjoy assistant-like features while opting out of having their interactions used for AI training.
