Hideo Kojima clarifies that Metal Gear Solid 2 is not just about AI, but explores the future of human existence in the digital era.
Hideo Kojima has dismissed a prevalent interpretation of Metal Gear Solid 2 that frames it as a narrative centered on AI. For the legendary game designer, the sequel delves deeper into the implications of living in a digital society.
“MGS2 is often misinterpreted as a story about AI, but it’s really about digital society,” Kojima shared in an interview. “MGS1 focused on DNA, marking my contemplation of the transition from analog to digital. In a digital society, everything is preserved—much like social media today. Even graffiti endures without fading. The internet links everything, allowing for direct exchanges of opinions everywhere. MGS2 examined what human existence might evolve into in that context.”
He further clarified that the stealth sequel “wasn’t about AI” but rather about “the intertwining of digital data developing its own will.” Regrettably, the fictional future he envisioned is becoming increasingly relevant.
“24 years have passed,” he noted. “It’s somewhat of a reality now. I didn’t foresee it. [It’s] more of a future I didn’t wish for, but unfortunately, we’re moving in that direction.”
Kojima also shared his perspective on generative AI, describing it as “more of a friend” that can enhance efficiency while he focuses on the creative aspects. “I’d like AI to take care of the mundane tasks that can reduce costs and save time,” he explained.
The creator of Death Stranding aims to “pioneer a new genre” rather than dwell on existing ones, though he still expresses interest in developing a Western or space-themed game.
