Mass Effect 5: Key Details About BioWare’s Upcoming RPG
It’s been over five years since BioWare first teased the next installment in the Mass Effect series, currently dubbed Mass Effect 5 until an official title is announced. Despite the anticipation, details have been scarce since that initial reveal. With Dragon Age: The Veilguard launching in 2024, Mass Effect 5 is expected to be BioWare’s next major release. However, the studio has remained tight-lipped about the project, and fans were left disappointed when no news surfaced at The Game Awards in late 2025. It’s been eight years since Mass Effect: Andromeda hit the shelves and 13 years since the original trilogy wrapped up. Many of the developers from the earlier games have moved on, leaving a team that is largely new to the franchise, which could result in a different feel for this upcoming title. Here’s what we know so far.
**Release Date**
As of now, BioWare hasn’t set a release date for Mass Effect 5. Executive producer Mike Gamble took to N7 Day in November 2025 to reassure fans that development is ongoing, though specifics were not provided. “Like you, we’ve heard the rumors lately. You’ve made it clear you care deeply about what’s next,” Gamble stated in a post. “So let’s start by setting the record straight: The next Mass Effect game is in development, and EA and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in this universe.” N7 Day 2024 offered even less information, as the focus shifted to Dragon Age: The Veilguard. As of 2025, it seems Mass Effect 5 is still in pre-production, indicating it may be years away from launch.
In February 2022, BioWare GM Gary McKay mentioned that Mass Effect 5 had entered the prototyping phase, with developers exploring various “ideas and experiences” for the game, suggesting it’s in the early stages. This was reiterated in an April 2022 blog post confirming that development is still in its “early” phases. By November 2022, for N7 Day, BioWare shared new concept art and noted that pre-production was progressing well. The teaser released for N7 Day 2023 was brief and enigmatic, hinting that the game isn’t quite ready for a full reveal. According to a report, Mass Effect 5 may follow a development timeline similar to Dreadwolf, which could mean a release window around 2028 or 2029.
**What We Know**
Information about Mass Effect 5 is limited, primarily derived from the announcement trailer. The trailer hints at two distinct galaxies, leading to speculation that the game could serve as a sequel to both Mass Effect 3 and Mass Effect: Andromeda, weaving a narrative that spans these two galaxies. At the very least, it appears to be a direct continuation of Mass Effect 3, featuring dead Reapers and an older Liara T’Soni. Given that Liara is 109 in Mass Effect 3 and her species can live for nearly 1000 years, the events of Mass Effect 5 could unfold up to 900 years after the original trilogy. BioWare producer Brenon Holmes confirmed that the game will utilize Unreal Engine, as indicated by a job listing seeking programmers experienced with Unreal Engine 4 and 5. Additionally, Mary DeMarle, known for her work on Deus Ex and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, has joined as the senior narrative director for Mass Effect 5. Gamble has shared snippets of information on social media, stating in October 2024 that “Mass Effect is photorealistic and will be as long as I’m running it,” confirming a departure from the stylized visuals seen in Dragon Age.
**Platforms**
The platforms for Mass Effect 5 have yet to be announced, but it’s reasonable to expect it will launch on current-gen consoles like Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, along with PC. It seems unlikely to be available on the Switch or older hardware like Xbox One and PS4, but nothing has been officially ruled out.
**Trailers**
Currently, we have only the announcement cinematic trailer for the new Mass Effect.
**Multiplayer Details**
BioWare has not disclosed whether Mass Effect 5 will feature multiplayer. Fans are hopeful, as the multiplayer modes in Mass Effect 3 and Andromeda offered engaging Horde-style gameplay that emphasized teamwork and strategy.
**DLC/Microtransaction Details**
There’s been no word on whether Mass Effect 5 will include DLC or microtransactions. Both Mass Effect 3 and Andromeda had microtransactions in their multiplayer modes, while the original trilogy featured paid DLC that expanded the story with new squadmates, quests, and gear. The post-launch DLC for Mass Effect 2 and 3, particularly the Lair of the Shadow Broker and Citadel expansions, are still regarded as some of the best in RPG history, so fans would likely welcome high-quality DLC for Mass Effect 5 if BioWare can deliver that level of storytelling again.
**Preorder Details**
Mass Effect 5 is not yet available for preorder.
