Avatar: Fire and Ash Makes a Strong Debut, But Not in the U.S.
James Cameron’s latest installment in the Avatar saga, Fire and Ash, has made a significant splash at the global box office, raking in $345 million during its opening weekend. While this marks the third-largest opening of 2025, it falls short of the $441.7 million debut of Avatar: The Way of Water in 2022 and trails behind the record-setting $556.4 million opening of Zootopia 2.
Despite its international success, U.S. audiences were less eager to catch Fire and Ash right away, with a domestic opening of $88 million, ranking as the ninth biggest of the year. This figure is notably behind other recent hits like A Minecraft Movie ($162.8 million), Wicked: For Good ($147 million), and Superman ($125 million), and it narrowly lost out to Captain America: Brave New World, which opened at $88.8 million.
The international reception has been robust, particularly in China, where Fire and Ash earned $57.6 million, contributing to a strong $109.4 million total across Europe. This trend highlights the film’s global appeal, as Avatar films have historically garnered over 70% of their box office revenue from international markets. This international dominance helped propel the first Avatar and The Way of Water to the top ranks of the highest-grossing films ever, contrasting with franchises like Wicked, which have seen over 60% of their earnings come from domestic audiences.
As noted, Avatar films typically enjoy a longer box office lifespan compared to the more front-loaded hits that dominate Hollywood today. Their stunning visuals and extended runtimes make them a must-see in premium theaters, and their late December release dates help sustain audience interest through the holiday season and into January.
Given these factors, it’s likely that Fire and Ash will continue to thrive, potentially surpassing the $1 billion mark globally. The question remains whether it will join its predecessors in the exclusive $2 billion club. Only time will tell.
