Twilight Princess Fans Achieve Full Decompilation of GameCube Version, Hinting at Possible PC Port Soon

Fans of The Legend of Zelda have successfully decompiled Twilight Princess, paving the way for a possible PC fan port in the future.

Following the success of the decompiled Ocarina of Time port, Ship of Harkinian, and the Majora’s Mask port, 2Ship2Harkinian, the community is eager to tackle other 3D Zelda titles. Fortunately, as noted by a user on a forum, the GameCube classic The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess has been fully decompiled after more than two years of effort, with the earliest files on GitHub dated August 9, 2023.

The 2020s have seen a remarkable trend in retro gaming, with fans diving into decompilation—an intricate process that breaks down games to their source code, allowing for extensive modifications. The impressive Super Mario 64 PC port in 2020 marked a significant milestone, leading to innovative ways to experience other N64 classics like Mario Kart 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Majora’s Mask, as well as Xbox 360 titles like Sonic Unleashed, which launched earlier this year.

However, just because a game has been decompiled doesn’t mean a PC port is guaranteed. For instance, Mario Party 4 was decompiled this year, yet a PC version has yet to materialize. As one user pointed out in the Twilight Princess discussion, “One problem for GCN games atm is [that the] graphics translation layer for GCN/Wii games is incomplete.”

That said, with a beloved title like Zelda: Twilight Princess, there’s likely a larger pool of enthusiasts eager to overcome the challenges of porting compared to something like Mario Party. While we can’t say for certain that a Twilight Princess PC port is on the horizon, the fact that it’s now a possibility is exciting news for fans.
