Microsoft Refutes Claims of Higher Profit-Margin Targets for Xbox
Microsoft has responded to a report indicating that the company is aiming to boost Xbox’s profitability. In a statement, they acknowledged their ambitious profit targets but clarified that the cited 30% profit margin figure was inaccurate. This statement was paraphrased without attribution to any specific individual within the company, and further inquiries have been made for additional details. Earlier this year, it was reported that Microsoft urged the Xbox team to enhance profit margins starting in 2023, with a target of reaching 30%, up from 12% in 2022. Analysts noted that the industry average for profit margins typically falls between 17% and 22%.
The report indicated that Microsoft CFO Amy Hood has been instrumental in implementing these new goals, with her team taking a more significant role in the gaming division. The Xbox team has been exploring various strategies to increase revenue by 2025, such as raising console prices, increasing Game Pass subscription fees, and releasing more titles on competing platforms. Additionally, the company has made significant cuts, including layoffs, game cancellations, and studio closures. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer stated that these measures were necessary due to market pressures.
Initially, Microsoft planned to set new game prices at $80 this year but later scrapped those plans. Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, emphasized the need for the Xbox team to maintain a “healthy business,” though he noted that this doesn’t automatically imply price hikes beyond $70 for new titles. He mentioned that monetization strategies are diverse and that the team will continue to consider fan feedback while balancing business needs. Currently, there are no updates on pricing for upcoming content.
Looking ahead, 2026 is shaping up to be a significant year for Microsoft, marking the 25th anniversary of Xbox and Halo, as well as the 40th anniversary of Bethesda, the 35th anniversary of Blizzard, and the 30th anniversary of the original Diablo. There are expectations that Microsoft may reveal new details about their next console in 2026, although this remains uncertain. An Xbox Developer Direct event is scheduled for January 2026, where some upcoming Xbox content will be showcased, though not everything will be revealed.
