DOJ’s Redactions in Epstein Files Raise Concerns

The Justice Department has attributed the delay in releasing certain Epstein files to the need for additional time to redact sensitive information, particularly details that could identify the victims of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. However, some of the redactions that have been made public seem to inadvertently reveal information that was intended to remain confidential.

A 2022 complaint from the US Virgin Islands, which sought damages from Epstein’s estate, was uploaded to the DOJ’s “Epstein Library” with numerous redactions. Techdirt founder Mike Masnick and others shared this on platforms like Bluesky. Interestingly, by copying and pasting the redacted sections into a new document, it becomes possible to uncover the obscured information. This method has revealed that one of the co-executors allegedly authorized over $400,000 in checks from Epstein’s foundation to “young female models and actresses, including a former Russian model.” It also indicates that a co-executor had signed a foundation check with the former model’s last name noted in the memo line, directed to an immigration lawyer involved in arranging forced marriages among Epstein’s victims to secure their immigration status. Additionally, it sheds light on one alleged victim mentioned in the complaint.

At least one source was reportedly able to deduce the URLs of files not yet available on the website by analyzing the format. However, Wired later discovered that the link appeared to be broken.

The DOJ has not yet responded to inquiries regarding these incidents. In a related note, the agency initially removed a photo featuring President Donald Trump alongside other notable figures, including the Pope and former President Bill Clinton, but restored it after receiving backlash. The DOJ stated on X that the image was “temporarily removed” for review after the Southern District of New York flagged it for potential further action to protect victims. They later confirmed that the image was restored without any changes, as there was no evidence linking it to victims.
