007: First Light Captures the Essential Element of an Epic Bond Adventure

IO Interactive has been weaving the tale of Agent 47 for 25 years, but now the studio is gearing up for a fresh adventure with a character rich in history. 007: First Light aims to explore James Bond’s early days as an agent, introducing players to a cast of unique and vibrant characters along the way. At The Game Awards, the first antagonist was unveiled: the pirate king Bawma, with Lenny Kravitz stepping into the role. Earlier this year, it was confirmed that Dr. Selina Tan, one of Bond’s trusted allies, will be played by Gemma Chan.

In a recent discussion, narrative director Martin Emborg shared insights about the star power behind the game, the challenges of revealing too much too soon, and a glimpse into Bond’s encounter with Bawma.

While Bawma’s character was in development before Kravitz joined the project, Emborg noted that the actor significantly influenced the character’s design. “We envisioned Bawma as a larger-than-life, colorful figure,” Emborg explained. “When Lenny came on board, he helped shape the character in a big way. His input was crucial in crafting Bawma’s cool outfit, traits, and backstory.”

So, who exactly is Bawma, and what can players expect in Aleph, the location where Bond will meet him? Emborg described Aleph as a treacherous place for a young secret agent to infiltrate, ruled by Bawma with an iron fist. “It’s a kingdom, and Bawma is its pirate king,” he said. “Aleph is one of the most dangerous places on Earth. At first glance, it seems like a high adventure, but as you get closer, you realize how risky it truly is. Once you enter, you might think, ‘I probably shouldn’t be here.’ It’s one of my favorite locations in the game.”

When asked what brings Bond to Aleph, Emborg kept details under wraps. “We have an amazing story lined up, and ideally, everyone would see the teaser trailer, buy the game, and dive in without any prior knowledge,” he said. “I love teasing, but the more context we provide in trailers, the less ‘cold’ players will be, so I prefer to keep things fresh.” He did confirm, however, that Bawma is a villain in 007: First Light, but not the only one—more antagonists are on the way.

While Emborg dreams of players experiencing the game without prior knowledge, he understands the need to generate excitement. “I’m fully aware that with big entertainment like this, you need to show people what they can expect,” he said. “This trailer is a great way to showcase Lenny, but how much do we reveal?”

He acknowledged the balance between building hype and maintaining mystery. “In an ideal world, players would go in cold and have an amazing experience. Regardless, players will still enjoy Bond’s journey, but I want to avoid giving away too much context.” As the launch date approaches, the team’s enthusiasm is palpable, and Emborg is eager for players to experience the story they’ve crafted. “After working on this for so long, it’s exciting to finally get it into players’ hands,” he said. “We’re teasing elements of the story, showcasing locations and characters, but the entire game promises a thrilling adventure.”

For Emborg, the characters are the heart of the experience. “When you see the full picture, you embark on a character-driven thrill ride,” he explained. “In a Bond game, the character is essential. You’ll have the usual cast of supporters and globe-trotting escapades, but I’m particularly excited for players to spend time with our version of James Bond—he’s a lot of fun.”

Among Bond’s key allies are his support team, like Q and M, who provide him with missions and gear. Earlier this year, IO introduced Dr. Selina Tan, portrayed by Gemma Chan, who Emborg says made the character her own from the start. “We had a character bio and an idea of how I wanted Dr. Tan to be,” he recalled. “Gemma came in with a take that completely transformed my vision. She infused Selina Tan with a charm and quirkiness I hadn’t anticipated, which was a joy to witness.”

For Emborg, Chan’s unique interpretation exemplifies the talent of a top-tier actor. “That’s the magic of working with great actors,” he said. “They do their homework and find angles on the character that surprise you. When they deliver a performance that catches you off guard, it’s a remarkable moment.”

These transformative moments, like Chan’s portrayal, are highlights of the narrative experience for Emborg. “I love those moments,” he said. “One of my favorite aspects of collaborating with actors is when you’ve prepared extensively, and then the actor arrives and you have that ‘eureka’ moment. It doesn’t happen all the time, but when it does, it reinforces why that actor is so exceptional.”

007: First Light is set to launch for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC on March 27, 2026.
