72-Year-Old Faces Up to Six Months in Jail for Tracking Pokémon TCG Delivery Driver
A 72-year-old man from Ohio has been charged with a first-degree misdemeanor for unlawfully attaching a tracking device to a delivery driver’s vehicle. What could possibly drive someone in their 70s to stalk another person and risk jail time? The answer lies in Pokémon cards.
Court documents reveal that Kent Kubasta admitted to placing a SpyTech GPS device on a delivery driver’s car while she was parked outside Operation Fandom in Wooster. In his statement to the police, Kubasta explained that he did this to “track her location/delivery of Pokémon cards.”
With the current scarcity of Pokémon cards at retail prices, it’s understandable that Kubasta was likely after the sought-after Pokémon 30th Celebration set, which is completely sold out. While it’s frustrating to miss out, it hardly justifies the potential 180 days in jail and a $1,000 fine he now faces for stalking the delivery driver.
What makes this situation even more absurd is that the owner of Operation Fandom pointed out in an interview that the information Kubasta sought could have easily been found through a simple Google search. “Facebook, Instagram—but especially TikTok and things like that. If you follow certain people, they will let you know when it’s going to drop. They will have links you can click to say supposedly this store is going to have them,” he noted.
This isn’t the first instance of collectors going to extreme lengths for shiny cards. In fact, the frenzy surrounding the 30th Celebration has led to various illegal antics this week, including reports of individuals pulling knives on fellow shoppers. Sure, that special illustration Mewtwo ex looks amazing, but it’s definitely not worth risking your safety over.
