8BitDo Unveils Ultimate 3E Modular Controller for Xbox and PC

8BitDo has just revealed the next evolution of its Ultimate controller series at CES 2026, and now we understand why an Xbox version of the Ultimate 2 has been absent. Introducing the 8BitDo Ultimate 3E, a wireless modular controller officially licensed for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, Apple devices, and Android. While a specific release date is still pending, it’s expected to launch in Q2 2026 (April to June). If you’re excited to try out 8BitDo’s first modular controller, be ready to shell out more than you did for the Ultimate 2 or any standard controller from this well-known accessory brand. The Ultimate 3E will retail for $150, putting it in direct competition with Microsoft’s Elite Series 2 and other licensed Xbox controllers like the Razer Wolverine V3 Pro, Victrix Pro BFG Reloaded, Nacon Revolution X Unlimited, Turtle Beach Stealth Ultra, Scuf Valor Pro, and GameSir G7 Pro.

As the most feature-packed and advanced controller in 8BitDo’s lineup, the Ultimate 3E incorporates elements from the Ultimate 2 and Pro 3 Controllers, but its fully modular design offers unprecedented customization options. While $150 isn’t exactly “budget-friendly,” it is priced lower than many of the competitors mentioned. The Ultimate 3E is only the second wireless controller from 8BitDo for Xbox, following last year’s Ultimate 3-Mode 40th Anniversary Edition, which is currently available for $80 (down from $90).

This new controller boasts several fresh features, including a slightly wider frame and textured silicone grips for enhanced comfort and control. Like the Elite Series 2 and other officially licensed third-party gamepads, the Ultimate 3E comes with a hardshell carrying case and a variety of swappable components. These modular parts include the left and right joysticks, D-pad, ABXY buttons, and the front faceplate. It includes two magnetic ABXY button modules—one standard and one microswitch—allowing players to switch between traditional membrane inputs and rapid, clicky microswitches for the first time. To change the ABXY modules, the magnetic faceplate must be removed.

The Ultimate 3E features TMR anti-drift joysticks with customizable RGB light rings, utilizing electromagnetic sensors for smoother and more precise stick movements compared to Hall Effect sticks. Alongside the standard sticks, the accessory kit includes four alternative options: two tall sticks, one dome-shaped stick, and one with a thicker metal ring for increased resistance. Players can also easily switch between two styles of D-pads: a newly designed eight-way D-pad and a classic four-way D-pad, both with magnetic connectors.

The modular design does not extend to the additional remappable buttons. Like the Ultimate 2, the Ultimate 3E includes two built-in back buttons and two extra shoulder buttons (R4 and L4). The shoulder buttons can be remapped directly on the controller, while the back buttons and other inputs require 8BitDo’s free Ultimate Software app for remapping. Other customizable settings, such as RGB lighting effects and stick/trigger sensitivity, can also be adjusted through the app. As with previous Ultimate models, you can create and store up to three custom control layouts, easily cycled through by pressing the Profile button on the controller.

The Ultimate 3E is 8BitDo’s first licensed Xbox controller to feature trigger stops, equipped with Hall Effect Impulse Triggers that provide haptic feedback similar to official Xbox Wireless Controllers. You can toggle switches on the back of the Ultimate 3E to enable faster trigger actuation, effectively turning RT and LT into shoulder buttons if they function like the Ultimate 2. The R4 and L4 shoulder buttons can be remapped without needing the Ultimate Software.

8BitDo claims the 1400mAh battery provides up to 18 hours of gameplay and takes 4-5 hours to fully charge. The controller comes with a wireless charging dock that features “zero contact points,” meaning no part of the controller touches the charging stand except for the charging pins. The 2.4GHz USB-C dongle is conveniently stored in the dock’s bottom compartment.

While the Ultimate 3E is designed for Xbox, it also includes some PC-exclusive features. Competitive gamers will appreciate the controller’s capability for up to 1,000Hz polling rates in both wireless and wired modes. PC players can also utilize customizable 6-axis motion controls when connected to the wireless dongle. The Ultimate 3E adds to 8BitDo’s impressive lineup of Xbox-licensed controllers and peripherals. The only other standard wireless controller from 8BitDo for Xbox is the striking Ultimate 3-Mode Rare 40th Anniversary Edition. Additionally, there are specialty options like the Wireless Arcade Stick, currently priced at $90 (down from $120), and the All-Button Arcade Controller for $80 (was $100).
