A beloved PlayStation shooter is set to make a comeback, according to recent reports.
A remaster of Killzone is reportedly in development, with hints that Guerrilla Games is collaborating with a third-party studio. While definitive confirmation is elusive, there are strong indications that the studio involved is People Can Fly, known for titles like Bulletstorm and Outriders, as well as their work on several Gears of War games.
Currently, Guerrilla Games is focused on Horizon Hunters Gathering, a multiplayer monster-hunting experience set in the Horizon universe. The report suggests that the Killzone remaster was initially intended to be Guerrilla’s next major project, but due to a reboot of the Horizon spin-off following some negative feedback, the studio is now redirecting its efforts to get that back on track.
Once a flagship FPS series for PlayStation, the original Killzone launched in 2004 on the PS2 and received mixed reviews, earning a Metacritic score of 70/100. Its sequel, Killzone 2, significantly improved the franchise’s standing with a score of 91 and garnered multiple awards.
While the specific title being remastered hasn’t been confirmed, there’s speculation that it will be the original Killzone. If true, this wouldn’t be the first remaster for the game; the Killzone Trilogy, released in 2011 for PS3, updated it to support 720p resolution and included trophy support.
This remaster would mark the return of the Killzone series after more than a decade, with the last entry being 2013’s Killzone: Shadow Fall. However, that title received a lukewarm reception, with some critics noting it felt “stuck in the past” and laden with familiar shooter tropes. Despite this, the multiplayer servers remained active until 2022.
As of now, there’s no official release date or announcement regarding this Killzone project, and given its early development stage, plans may evolve. Fans are hopeful for more news once Horizon Hunters Gathering is released.
