A Beloved SNES Action-RPG Is Set for a Much-Needed Revival

The SNES was packed with amazing RPGs, but one standout title from a legendary developer has remained somewhat under the radar. The recent announcement of a re-release for Terranigma on modern platforms, showcased during the latest Pixel Arcadia event, might finally change that.

Regarded as one of the finest action RPGs on the console, Terranigma is less recognized than other Quintet classics like ActRaiser and Illusion of Gaia. This is partly due to its late release in the console’s lifecycle and the fact that it never made its way to North America. The upcoming port from Clear River Games for PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC marks the first time the game will be officially available outside of Japan, Europe, and Australia.

For those who haven’t experienced it yet, it’s worth noting that Terranigma – Rebirth, as it’s called, is not a remake or a reimagining but rather a straightforward re-release with some quality-of-life enhancements for modern gamers. Players will have the option to keep certain stats visible in the blank space outside the original 4:3 aspect ratio, and there are hints of additional bonus features that could excite returning fans.

From what we’ve seen in the trailer, the core real-time action and adventure gameplay remains largely intact. Manga artist Kamui Fujiwara, who designed the characters for the original, has also created new key art for the Rebirth release. Despite the growing interest in retro gaming and the various ways classic titles are being reintroduced to modern audiences, many gems are still waiting to be rediscovered, and Terranigma is certainly one of those titles that could shine with a fresh release.

The game is set to launch in 2027 for Switch, Switch 2, PS4, PS5, Xbox, and PC. With the preservation of disc-based media being a hot topic, the involvement of Limited Run Games (as noted on the game’s Steam page) could mean a physical release in North America and other regions is on the horizon. We’ll have to keep an eye on that as the release date approaches.
