A counterfeit WhatsApp clone is appearing ahead of the official app on the Play Store.
A user on Reddit has reported spotting a counterfeit version of WhatsApp in a “sponsored” section above the legitimate app on the Play Store, following the discovery of a Chrome clone earlier this week. This fake WhatsApp has already amassed over 500,000 downloads, and as of now, its listing remains active.
The clone is developed by a company named “Agment Assets sallu,” which has no other apps available on the Play Store. The fraudulent listing mirrors the real WhatsApp in terms of icon, screenshots, and description. In contrast, the authentic WhatsApp boasts over 10 billion downloads, an “editor’s choice” badge, and more than 246 million reviews. It’s worth noting that the WhatsApp clone might be leveraging Google Play’s Early Access program to prevent public user reviews, which could have served as a warning to potential downloaders.
