A Decade Later, Beloved Animated Classic Hits Theaters Again in Stunning 4K

Your Name is making its triumphant return to theaters to mark its 10th anniversary. This beloved 2016 animated film, directed by Makoto Shinkai, known for works like Weathering with You and Suzume, garnered widespread acclaim upon its release and continues to be hailed as a masterpiece in animation. The 4K remaster is set to hit theaters starting August 14.

The announcement came from a recent post on social media, shortly after a successful appearance at this year’s Anime Expo. The distributor has built a reputation as a key player in bringing Japanese films and shows to international audiences, often releasing physical editions of its catalog. Notably, it won an Oscar in 2024 for Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and the Heron.

The official synopsis of Your Name describes the story as follows:

One morning, rural schoolgirl Mitsuha and city kid Taki awaken to discover that they’ve switched bodies. The total strangers struggle to navigate each other’s lives, walking tightropes of intimacy and distance. But when they finally resolve to meet, the true nature of their connection threatens to seal their fate.

Your Name stands as a modern classic in both animation and romance. The tale of Mitsuha and Taki is brought to life with breathtaking visuals and outstanding voice performances in both Japanese and English. The film’s soundtrack, crafted by the Japanese rock band Radwimps, enhances the intertwining love story, making it feel truly special.

While details on which theaters will screen the 4K remaster are still pending, you can sign up for updates on the distributor’s website. To celebrate the film’s tenth anniversary, new Blu-ray and 4K UHD Steelbook editions of Your Name are also being released, available for pre-order now. These editions come packed with bonus features, including a behind-the-scenes look and an interview with Makoto Shinkai. If you can’t wait until August, Your Name is currently available for streaming on HBO Max and YouTubeTV.
