A decade later, Darkest Dungeon is set to receive new DLC.
Red Hook Studios has unveiled a new DLC for Darkest Dungeon, marking the first significant content update for the horror roguelike in six years, rather than for its 2023 sequel, Darkest Dungeon 2. Titled The Fire’s Edge, this expansion is set to launch on August 18, coinciding with the 10th anniversary of Darkest Dungeon’s original release. This trend of major expansions arriving years after a game’s debut continues, reminiscent of titles like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
The Fire’s Edge will introduce elements from Darkest Dungeon 2 to the original game, featuring characters like The Duelist and The Runaway, who will bring their distinct abilities into the mix. The Runaway will introduce a new Burn mechanic, enabling players to ignite the dungeon during battles. Additionally, players can look forward to three new districts: the Academie Duello, Craftworks, and Archaeological Base Camp, along with new trinkets. Red Hook has hinted at more surprises, including fresh writing and events.
While some fans are concerned that the influx of new content might disrupt long-standing mods, Red Hook has reassured players that new tools for modding are in development. As with any update, there will be an adjustment period, so don’t expect your favorite mods to function immediately with The Fire’s Edge. The DLC will be available on all platforms except Xbox, which will receive it at a later, unspecified date.
Red Hook joins a growing list of developers releasing new content for older games. Notably, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is set to receive a new expansion, Songs of the Past, next year. Capcom has also announced that Dragon’s Dogma 2 will feature a Dark Arisen version later this year, bringing quality-of-life improvements and a new region.
Darkest Dungeon masterfully combines dungeon crawling, turn-based combat, roguelike elements, and horror into a captivating experience. While Darkest Dungeon 2 launched in 2023 to a more mixed reception compared to its predecessor, the core combat remains engaging, though the shift away from traditional dungeon crawling has divided fans. Red Hook has indicated that players can anticipate future DLC for Darkest Dungeon 2 in early 2027. Although the price for The Fire’s Edge has yet to be announced, previous DLC has typically been priced around $9.99.
