A decade-old cannibal-themed short horror film by the Duffers has resurfaced online, possibly hinting at connections to the series finale of Stranger Things.
Just two weeks after the finale of Stranger Things season 5 dropped on Netflix, the Duffer brothers’ short horror film from nearly 20 years ago has made a surprising comeback online, revealing intriguing connections to the sci-fi series.
In 2007, Matt and Ross Duffer wrote and directed a short horror film titled Eater while they were students at California’s Dodge College. This film was released a decade before they hit it big with Stranger Things. Thanks to an outlet, the short is now gaining attention and is available to watch for free on YouTube.
The 18-minute film, inspired by a short story of the same name by Peter Crowther, centers on a rookie cop working the night shift at a police station, which is soon overrun by a deranged cannibal prisoner. Emanuel Borria stars in the film and later reunited with the Duffers for Stranger Things season 5, where he portrayed Sergeant Luis Ramirez, one of Dr. Kay’s soldiers, in three episodes.
Borria isn’t the only link between Eater and Stranger Things; the horror film appears to be referenced in the series finale’s epilogue. In a scene where Steve, Jonathan, Nancy, and Robin are gathered on the roof of the radio tower towards the end of episode 8, they take turns sharing what they’ve been up to. Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton) mentions that he is studying filmmaking at New York University and is working on an “anti-capitalist cannibal movie” called The Consumer.
This seems like more than just a coincidence, as Eater and The Consumer share a similar theme. Fans have picked up on this connection, with one joking in the comments, “So Jonathan managed to make the film?” It’s possible the Duffers have more of their past works planned for future intertwining.
