A first glimpse at the upcoming Game of Thrones game has arrived!
With its intense moral dilemmas, brutal combat, and deep lore, you’d expect a celebrated fantasy series like Game of Thrones to have a wealth of impressive video game adaptations by now. While there have been some attempts, a standout title like Game of Thrones: War for Westeros may finally deliver the epic scale that fans have been craving.
So far, aside from an initial reveal and news of a delay, details about the game have been scarce. However, that will change on August 25 during Gamescom Opening Night Live. Developers PlaySide Games have hinted that the first gameplay footage of this real-time strategy game for PC will be showcased at the European gaming event. The teaser features a Lannister army charging towards a Stark host, with a dragon on the enemy side preventing the wealthy Lannisters from reliving the events of the series’ iconic song, ‘The Rains of Castamere.’
The game will also feature House Targaryen and the Night King’s army, each with unique tactics, abilities, and heroes. Players will have the opportunity to forge alliances with various factions in their quest for the Iron Throne. Jon Snow will lead the Northern forces, Tywin will command the Lannisters, and Daenerys will head the Targaryens. War for Westeros will also include multiplayer options.
While the game emphasizes large-scale battles where players control entire armies, PlaySide Games aims to create a “visceral” experience. In addition to standard unit types, War for Westeros will incorporate magical elements, such as giants and the undead. Diplomacy plays a significant role as well, leading to unexpected scenarios. An early development diary even showcased Jon Snow teaming up with the Night King to assault King’s Landing.
“It’s cunning that decides who sits on the Iron Throne,” the trailer proclaims.
Gamescom Opening Night Live will air on Tuesday, August 25, promising new game reveals and a variety of exclusive announcements.
