A Jeff the Killer film is in the works, inspired by the success of Backrooms.

Prepare for a wave of nostalgia as your favorite middle school creepypastas are set to hit the big screen. Following the incredible success of A24’s Backrooms, Hollywood is racing to adapt more viral internet horror tales, with Jeff the Killer next in line.

This film is being brought to life by filmmaker Savanah Moss and Tongal, a platform that connects businesses with creative talent. Jeff the Killer, a creepypasta that emerged in 2008, tells the chilling story of a 13-year-old serial killer who begins his murderous spree after being bullied and disfigured. The character is famously linked to a haunting image of a pale-faced figure with a disturbing grin.

Savanah Moss, a TikTok creator and filmmaker known for her surreal horror-comedy content, is at the helm. Her recent posts showcase her unique style, filled with jump cuts and Lynchian oddities. She made her directorial debut with the short film “Funny Bunny” in 2025 and has amassed a following of 11.4 million on TikTok.

“What I’ve always loved about Jeff is how much of the character was built by the internet,” Moss shared. “Jeff became an internet icon, and over the years, countless people have added their own twists to his story. We have a unique chance to take this well-known character and craft a genuinely terrifying, grounded horror film while honoring Jeff’s origins. I’m not just looking to recreate the creepypasta — I want to make Jeff feel terrifyingly real.” Moss is producing alongside Mark Korshak and Michael McKay.

The success of recent horror hits like Backrooms and Obsession has prompted studios to seek out younger creators with social media experience. Backrooms, which adapts a viral creepypasta, has grossed nearly $395 million worldwide on a $10 million budget, while Obsession turned a $900K budget into $488 million. Both films were helmed by young creators, Kane Parsons and Curry Barker, who began their careers making horror videos on YouTube. Parsons is currently in talks with A24 for a significant deal, while Barker is busy with multiple projects, including Anything but Ghosts for Focus Features and Universal Pictures, a Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot, and another original horror film for Universal. He has also expressed interest in reviving the Freddy Krueger franchise.

In addition to Jeff the Killer, other horror films based on internet properties are on the horizon. Earlier this year, a bidding war led by Steven Spielberg, United Artists’ Scott Stuber, and Amazon MGM Studios secured the rights to the YouTube series The Mandela Catalogue, which will be directed by its original creator, Alex Kister. Upcoming projects also include Siren Head, with a screenplay by Zach Cregger, Trevor Henderson’s Cartoon Cat, and an SCP Foundation tie-in with the V/H/S series.
